Arts & artists... Until a few years ago, I only marginally felt touched by any arts. Of course I had a few favorite paintings then, for example 'Einsamer Baum' by the German romanticism artist Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) or 'Almond blossom' by the Dutch Vincent van Gogh, but other than that nothing really attracted my attention. When travelling I enjoy visiting local exhibitions though and so during a short stopover in Amsterdam I went to the van Gogh Museum to see my favorite painting by him. In general I am more attracted by strong colors and likewise colorful compositions, but it always needs to be in a realistic setting. Most times when I don't find any identifiable motif the artist lost me ...

During the MoMA exhibition in Berlin I have seen paintings of Dali which until then I imagined to be big, so for me it came as a surprise that not all of them are. The ability to put so much color and clear content in such a restricted amount of space really struck me as an art on its own, because I was not so much impressed by the themes of the paintings themselves.

If only the 'museum walk', as I call the alteration of short steps and standing still, wouldn't be so tiring I would love to spend more time exploring. But as it is, and to avoid getting a mental overflow I usually pick one exhibition area to look at and skip all the rest. Of course I might miss a lot but the things I do see I enjoy awake and open minded. During my last visit to Paris I went to the Louvre. Having been there before this time I stuck to the special exhibit of the Czech František Kupka (1871-1957). For the first time in my life an artist fascinated me to this extent. His burlesque works have very critical social topics. |
